How much does a website cost?

Even if you are a straightforward and decisive person there is no way to talk about the price of a website without sounding totally wishy washy. The answer always comes down to some sort of variation of “it depends”. We explored the topic of how much “a website” costs in a blog post a few years ago. Let’s dig into how we at Spring Insight determine the pricing for a website we build.

What kind of functionality does the site have?

The most critical piece to determine our price is what the website needs to do. Is it a standard business development website with 15 or so pages and calls to action sprinkled around the site? Or, does it have a custom blog area with multiple topics, language translation, a portal, or other more advanced functionality? That makes a big difference in the cost.

How big is the website?

We don’t charge on a per page basis because that is just silly. (Each additional page doesn’t really require much work to create.) Plus, don’t you want the flexibility to add pages as we go through the planning process? That said, a large site does bring more complexity. More thought must be put into information, organization and making sure that the right audience finds what they are looking for quickly.

How important is accessibility?

Accessibility to your website for people with visual, auditory, cognitive, speech, or visual difficulties is an essential part of building a website in the current environment. If you aren’t sure why, check out this blog about the topic.  But, different websites require different levels of accessibility compliance. For most, being compliant with the spirit of the law is sufficient. While others require that a website be thoroughly reviewed and vetted to ensure that accessibility compliance has been checked with assistive technologies. Those extra steps are highly beneficial, but add significantly to the scope of the project.

What else?

There are all sorts of other elements that go into building a website. Are we doing the writing? (We do for most of the websites we create.) What about your branding? Is your logo strong enough to represent your organization on your brand new website? Do you need expanded, perhaps SEO services as part of our set up? These are extra services that impact the final price.

Wiggle room

It is almost impossible to foresee every possible change that might happen over the course of a project. Whether it is additional time to get pages approved, additional revisions, or custom design for more pages than originally discussed. In project management speak this is all “scope creep.” At Spring Insight, we always plan for some amount of scope creep. It is unavoidable and we never want to nickel and dime a client during a project. The amount of wiggle room we build in is based on how tightly understood the scope is from the start.

So, if I hire Spring Insight to build my website, how much will it cost?

I warned you from the start that we would be ending here with an answer of “it depends”. But, to give you some ballpark numbers to work with, our project minimum (or what I call our “get out of bed price”) is $8,500 for a website. (We do sometimes go lower in conjunction with a marketing plan.) In 2022, the average project cost for a completed website was $10,500.

One promise we will make, you will never be surprised by any charges. We work on a fixed price basis and the price is known from the start. If there are changes during the process that are sufficiently large to require additional charges, we will get you those for approval before any work is done. We only want to surprise you with how awesome your new website is!

How much do Spring Insight’s Marketing Services Cost?

Has there ever been a question as simple and yet complex as how much a services organization charges for those services? I really want to give you a number here and spend the rest of my day playing Two Dots (an addictive phone game) instead of finishing writing this article. But, here we are. Giving you a set number for cost would do both you and I a disservice. That is because it depends. Let’s talk about what it depends upon.

What are we doing?

The marketing toolbox has a LOT of different tools in it. Whether it is creating tons of valuable web content (like this!), social media, search engine optimization, paid search advertising, or good old fashioned print design in preparation for a conference appearance, we have many options for your marketing. As part of our kick off process we will decide what the core of our services will be.

How much noise do you want us to make?

Do you want us to update your social media once a week? Do you want us making sure your Google Business Profile is always up to date? Are we creating a ton of content every month? As you can imagine, all of these decisions have an impact on our pricing.

How big is your organization?

Larger organizations are a bit more work. There are more systems in place, more people in the mix needing marketing support, and there is much more “stuff” that tends to come up. For that reason, those engagements are pricier than those for our smaller businesses.

We are built for flexibility

One thing we want to make clear about our pricing is that we build our engagements for flexibility. While we do identify expected deliverables from the start, we also provide “work block” time every month that allows us to meet the changing needs of our clients. You know what? Sometimes those clients need a lot more than what we have set aside. (Perhaps they are hosting a webinar and need all sorts of digital collateral created, or perhaps they are announcing a new service.) But, sometimes they just don’t need as much so it evens out. We want to be the partner you need when you need us.
